So now that the Voltron crew are back on Earth after Season 7, can we finally get some decent stories about their families seeing their kids now as soldiers who fought a war, with all that that implies, and the Earthlings viewing them as 'Alien' because of their experiences?

And while we’re there, can someone for the LOVE OF FUCK mention how very dead the ENTIRE PLANET would be if not for the fact that team voltron already did the heavy lifting in killing Zarkon, getting the Empire split up and the destabilizing the various fractions that didn’t fall in line, punting Lotor away, and (this has less to do with their direct actions, but it’s still down to them being in space) Haggar leaving to do whatever nefarious thing she’s off to??

(Bringing her husband back again? She is, after all, Evil And In Love.)

The coalition is there, can someone mention how very dead that entire planet would have been in a month if an actual Galra Legion came upon them and not Sendak and his 5 buddies?? How so many of their population would have been used as batteries, their planet stripped of resources and quintessence if Haggar and her druids were still around?? Like, Sam Holt maybe would have gotten them to month three, MAYBE, but like….yeah. Primitive world, primitive tech, it would have been a disaster.

(And while we’re here can someone just rewrite the Earth Arc so less of Team Voltron ends up holding the Idiot Ball and doesn’t have to weaken Voltron for the sake of Earth’s knockoff Eva gundam?)

BITTER

But, yeah, we need so many fic of people from their past realizing that they’re not the same kids they were when they left and people even realizing that Shiro and Matt have hardened and changed too.

I have wants and needs and thank fuck for fanfic cause we all know the show’s not going to follow through on anything.

:)!

(yep, i’m still really mad about the queerbaiting and the bury your gays and the evil queers and the miserable celibate queer tropes that made it into S7. And the rushed writing in the later half of the season. And that weird placement of the robobeast fight. forever bitter, never forget)

You know, I just realized: Season 6 had Krolia thank Shiro for looking after Keith, but that was Kuron. Now in Season 7 she gets to meet the real Shiro, and after spending like 10 minuted with this Tired Dad-man she'll probably go "Ohhhh-, things make more sense now...". Meanwhile, poor Shiro goes "yeah... I've been getting that a LOT..."

Krolia will be even more impressed because Shiro and her husband are ridiculously alike and no wonder Keith practically imprinted on Shiro. Shiro was literally the universe saying that Good Things Still Happen Just Because - Keith and Krolia were separated, Keith lost his father, got shuffled around through the system and was abandoned, forgotten, and tossed aside over and over again and then here comes Takashi Shirogane.

Just, takes a look at this disaster of a kid and decides “that one - that’s my child. fite me”. And talking with Actual Original Facts Shiro does explain SO MUCH about Keith -

He’s emotional but he puts up all these walls you have to scale to get close to him; but the moment you just give him a little bit of attention, he blossoms under it. Keith wants connections and people in his life, but he’s terrified that they’ll leave him, but he still reaches for them all the same.

Keith wants to discuss his problems when he has them, but he also doesn’t want to bother anyone with them, but if he has a Trusted Person To Talk To? He will talk for hours through his problems, tackling it from different angles and have different plans on how to solve something. He’s impulsive in the heat of the moment, but even those decisions have a lot of thought put into them, and afterward he takes apart the problem and his first attempt at fixing it until he really understands everything that went wrong.

And that’s because of Shiro. Shiro gave him a constant; someone who would always be there to talk to him; someone who would listen and give good advice but also wasn’t afraid to say “I have no idea, let’s Google it/Ask Someone Else”. He fought really hard to get to Keith’s emotional center and then he didn’t abandon Keith when it turned out that Keith wasn’t a one-dimensional cut out of an idea. He saw all of Keith’s issues, all of the things that even Keith himself didn’t like, and he stayed.

He stayed so hard that it took literal aliens abducting him to get him to leave Keith.

And then he came back to Keith, anyway.

In Keith’s life, that has never happened. People leave and they stay gone - even his father stayed gone, because even though he’s dead that feels like an abandonment at the end of the day.

But Shiro stayed. Shiro fought to get back to Keith, to Earth.

And because of Shiro, Keith got to meet the other paladins. He got to be a part of something huge and wonderful and the other paladins haven’t left him either. He has let them down, has shown them really shitty parts of himself, and made bad decision after bad decision. And they all stay with him, they all let him leave and come back, and never hold it against him. He has five people who are not Shiro who would literally kill for him and none of them are leaving him. (And they would kill for him, not die for him, because none of them are leaving him. They’re not leaving him!)

His mother came back for him and they got to spend two years with each other - getting to know one another and reconnecting.
Shiro was the first person who didn’t leave him, who came back, and because of him he has a larger family now. He has people he can depend on, care about, trust, lean on, talk to, and just hang out with because of Shiro.

Keith is so thankful for Shiro’s existence and presence in his life but so is Krolia. Without Shiro there, Keith would have been a much different person - more bitter, less trusting, more serious, more angry. He might never have let Krolia back into his heart without Shiro’s influence.

So, yes, Krolia is so thankful for Shiro’s very existence and it does explain SO MUCH about the person her son is. Krolia is so proud of her son and so happy to know someone took care of him in her place, in her husband’s place, when they couldn’t.

I have so many feelings about Keith and Shiro’s found family feels, yall. So many feels.

(Original tumblr tags on this: #Shiro and Keith's relationship is so important yall #like Shiro is Space Dad bc he got so much practice being Dad to Keith #AND HE DID SO WELL WITH KEITH #I love Found Families esp for queer coded kids #MORE FOUND FAMILIES BEING JUST AS EQUAL TO BIRTH ONES)

Shiro making even more Dad Jokes than usual to try and help everyone lighten up after Season 6, but he only makes things worse because every time he goes into Dad Mode everyone else feels HORRIBLY guilty about not noticing something was wrong sooner.

It’s the cycle of guilt and shame, sounds about right.

Shiro says something punny and awful, and Lance feels like shit because Kuron didn’t do that nearly as much, he should have noticed, he should have realized sooner that something was wrong, he’s so selfish for not noticing.

Shiro does the Dad Eyebrow Arch of Disapproval after something blows up in his face and Hunk mentally shrinks even as he gives a sheepish grin. Kuron would have given him a lecture but it would have been edged with aggression and more anger than disappointment and worry and Hunk feels awful for not noticing the difference. He thought it was just the stress of everything finally catching up with him, not…damn, he really wishes he could make some chicken katsu because he knows that’s Shiro’s favorite. Maybe he can get his hands on some alien animal that is similar to chicken…

Shrio and Pidge space-skype Matt and her older brother seems to lose a bit of tension that she hadn’t even noticed he was carrying until it was gone. Shiro and Matt trade inside jokes that she hasn’t heard in years and at one point Shiro absentmindedly halfs a loaf of pseudo space bread and hands half of it to her and she holds it in her hand, just staring. Kuron never shared his food without thought like this and it hadn’t even occurred to her that was strange.

Shiro talks with his mother and Keith pets Yao-Pyon. He had left the others with an imposter with his brother’s face. He had loved, had trusted, had liked Kuron and didn’t notice anything off about him. He had believed, even after seeing the other clones, that the Shiro in front of him, fighting him, snarling at him, was his brother. Maybe he was. He had the same memories, the same knowledge, the same feel, the same experience. Did that mean he had murdered a version of his brother to get the original version back? He piloted the Black Lion so he clearly had a soul….was it the same as the one inside Shiro? A warped shadow even down to that level? Haggar could probably do something that evil, that unnatural.

I died, Keith.

And then they had brought him back and put him into another body. He had done it out of love and compassion, sure, but at the end of the day was his action any different than what Zarkon had done for his beloved wife? Any different than what Haggar did to Zarkon?

Any different than what she did to Kuron and Shiro? It was just as unnatural.

Yao-Pyon licked his face and he pushed at her weakly, mostly for show, and she knew it because she just teleported directly onto his chest, pushing him over easily.

Shiro had folded back into their group easily, but what would be the cost of this?

He didn’t know.

Keith is glowing lightly still, his eyes wild and burning yellow, and for a moment Lance is terrified of him.

Then Haggar’s lifeless corpse falls to the ground with a thump and Lance remembers himself, where he is, which whom, and just gets really worried instead. He doesn’t know a lot about quintessence - that’s always been the domain of Allura, Pidge, and Matt - but he imagines that it’s probably a bad sign that Keith is still literally glowing as if his skin were a sun and that his eyes have taken on a distinct Galra shape and color as opposed to his normal, human ones. Keith walks over to him, staring up at his face for a long few moments, before he reaches out to touch the crystalized quintessence keeping Lance melded to the ship’s bulkhead. It cracks right down the center and Lance falls right into Keith’s waiting arms and for a sickening moment all Lance can hear is tortured screams; the wailing of what feels like some enraged, terrified creature and then Keith’s face is pressed against his neck and the screaming tapers off into a feeling of wrongness in the back of his mind. The glow is receding from Keith’s skin, he’s shaking in Lance’s arms, and they need to get off this ship, need to get back to the others, but Keith is shaking and starting to make these wounded noises and…

They just killed the Witch of the Galra Empire, they can afford a few moments to make sure Keith gets his shit together long enough to make it back to the castle in one shape.

Sentence prompt: "Keith had no idea what he was doing, but then again, when did he ever?" (For Voltron, I see you joined us in Voltron Hell finally!!)

(I have indeed joined everyone in Voltron Hell. I’m catching up on S4 right now, myself and my friend group are on episode…3? I think? Anywho..)

Keith had no idea what he was doing, but then again, when did he ever?

When he went to get Shiro from the Garrison, he hadn’t known what he was doing; when he found and flew Red for the first time, he’d had no idea what he was doing; when he joined the Blades he’d known nothing and that really does seem to be the summary of his life. He never knows what he’s doing because he’s so bad at everything that makes things meaningful and real - he doesn’t know what to do with his emotions, doesn’t know how to read other people’s, has never known when to let people in and when to hold them at bay, and this is just more of the same, really. Hunk is sobbing into his shoulder and Keith is frozen, unsure of what to do, and he tries to think of what Shiro would do in this situation. Hunk isn’t physically hurt, Keith already checked for that, and he can breathe just fine - if he couldn’t, his suit would be chirping loud enough that Keith would be able to hear it form this close - and Keith knows that he’s upset because he’s upset too, just to broken to be able to cry like this. He tentatively touches Hunk’s back and when he doesn’t get shoved away, he settles his hands more firmly on his friend’s back (they’re friends, Lance said so; Pidge said so, Hunk said so, so they’re friends.) and rubs his back the way Shiro used to do for him when everything was too much and Keith ended up screaming and breaking things or hitting someone.
