So, S2 takes the plot and then folds out entire arcs so that the entire thing finishes in 2 seasons. And by that I mean like...it folds the arcs down so the rest of the plot threads on either end of the arc meet and can continue. I'm COMPLETELY baffled by the decision making process of that studio bc....why do you not want to make money??? TPN was one of the most popular titles JUMP has had since, I think Bleach? They ranked in the top five with fucking ONE PIECE. There is a market there that was VERY on board to spend it's money for merchandise and got the S1 anime up in ratings so the idea that they'd cripple themselves by only making this series a two season one is just....WHY. The manga has at least enough in it for five seasons, at 12 episodes each, easily. THAT'S SO MUCH MORE MONEY THEY COULD HAVE MADE??? Like...there is CLEARLY something behind the scenes that we are just NOT seeing that made them make this decision and like it's just....very weird.
And like, regarding the plot folding that happens in S2 it's clear that a lot of care and effort was put in to making it WORK. Which means that it wasn't like the animators or even the director was like “fuck this series in particular, let's get it to RUIN IT” like – they clearly CARED about this project and did SO MUCH to make sure that getting ti condensed this way worked as seamless as possible and the finale montage of things happening shows off little “Easter eggs” of arcs that were cut out to get us to the ending so like...?????
And there is also a REALLY FUCKED UP moment where Emma gets on a soapbox and forgives Isabella on behalf of all the children of Grace Field and herself and I'm like “???? Oh word, fuck you, absolutely not” Like....NO. I GET why this was made into a thing – with the Japanese Elderly population outgrowing the current population they're very big on pushing the "forgive and love your parents so when they are elderly, you can care for them" thing so at least it MADE SENSE but also NO.
Isabella does NOT ask for forgiveness and NO ONE gives it to her! She did what she did TO SURVIVE. She does NOT feel like she needs to ask for forgiveness for any of it, as she LOVES her children AS MEANS FOR HER TO SURVIVE. She does not LOVE them as PEOPLE and that's one of the reasons why Emma in particular pities all the Mothers and wants to break the system to prevent anyone else from having to be made into someone like Isabella – someone who has to jump through mental hoops to keep herself alive and somewhat sane and able to care for children she KNOWS will be killed off when they reach a certain age or sold into further suffering like Isabella herself was. NO ONE forgives her and NO ONE has to.
Like, FUCK that ENTIRE MOMENT.
But, even saying that, I get why it's there. The cultural context making that A Thing because the countries population is upside down and therefore they have a vested interest in making sure that the younger generation is up to caring for the older – that makes sense.
It's the only thing that makes sense about this tho.
Just....What the fuck???
The worst thing is that this isn't even the worst adaption of a source material the anime industry has seen but also like....why are we still doing this???
And more importantly: WHY DOES THIS STUDIO NOT WANT TO MAKE MONEY???
